At Highland, our Emergency Department is truly a family. There are regular residency-wide events including scheduled wellness outings, post-shift gatherings, group lunches after weekly conferences, post-night shift breakfast, and much more. Annually, there are intern-welcoming BBQ’s and parties, residency retreats, holiday parties, and the Red Dot Ball, an ED-organized costume party that has become famous in Alameda County (attended by ED and non-ED residents, attendings, staff, nursing, techs, paramedics, the fire department, and the Oakland Police Department), in honor of the late Highland attending, Pat Connell, MD.

SailingResidents are frequently planning group trips to our North Lake Tahoe cabin in the winter for skiing and snowboarding or meeting at Ocean Beach to catch some surf when the latest swell has come through. Each year, we have a growing group of residents, attendings, and nurses teaming up to parade down the famous Bay to Breakers course in San Francisco. Our department is the official medical staff for the annual Avon Beast Cancer Walk.

In addition to lending education support and mentorship, each resident is part of a Buddy Group – attending buddies are frequently planning events for their group, including dinners, concerts, sailing trips, paintballing, go-cart racing, and more.

FamilyFamily is very important at Highland, and our scheduling keeps this in mind – allowing residents flexibility to visit across the country, take time off for weddings or personal issues, and plan for pregnancy or maternity/paternity leave. We are a very baby-friendly program, and it’s not uncommon to meet the latest addition to the Highland family at our weekly conference.
